The mascil project is possessing a great success in Turkey. This is due to an excellent dissemination work on many different levels like teacher workshops, conferences, media coverage or diverse cooperation with different stakeholders. Thus, mascil has been making a substantial influence on policy makers, researchers and practitioners in Turkey. The team of the University of Education in Freiburg is cooperating with the training section of S. Siedle & Sons in Furtwangen. The team offers professional development courses for mathematics teachers which will take place in the company's vocational training workshop where usually industrial mechanics, industrial business managers, IT-system electronics technicians and electronics technicians are being trained. The courses start in September.

mascil is hosting the conference which will take place from December 15th to December 16th 2014 at the University of Duisburg-Essen in cooperation with the DZLM (German Centre for Mathematics Teacher Education). Further supporters are the University of Education Freiburg, the University Duisburg-Essen and the EMS (European Mathematical Society). The deadline for registration is Friday, 28 November 2014.

At the end of this week the University of Education in Freiburg started its first mascil teacher training for secondary school teachers. "With our training we show mathematics and science teachers how they can initiate motivating learning processes based on real work experiences we got access to through our cooperation with several vocational school teachers", says Prof. Dr. Katja Maaß from the Institute of Mathematical Education in Freiburg.

December 3rd 2013: The results of the PISA report focused on mathematics are no big surprise and show once again that standarized assessment studies don't bring about the insights needed to improve school education. Seventeen universities and institutes which started to work together on the EU project mascil (mathematics and science for life) at the beginning of this year are therefore demanding deeper analyses on how to broadly improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science.

The authors describe the development of a didactic scenario illustrating inquiry-based learning (IBL) implemented in an educational project. The project shows that two ideas are central when implementing IBL: to include problem solving scenarios that can be developed both vertically - in grades - and horizontally - applying the integral approach within the same grade, i.e. to let students see one and the same notion reflected in different contexts.
